Reduce - Reuse - Recycle
Beate Popkin, Earth Ministry

We began serious recycling last summer.  Blue containers are positioned throughout our building to receive paper and most plastics, which go into our Rosie recycling bins for city pick-up.   In addition, conscientious parishioners put used glass, which the city does not collect from institutional clients, into their Rosies at home or in public glass recycling bins.

In November our church embarked on another effort to reduce the materials that needlessly go into the landfill.  We now reuse the cups from which we drink during our Sunday morning coffee hour.  The Earth Ministry group has set up a wash station in the parish hall, where parishioners who want to participate in this ministry can wash, rinse, dry and store the mugs or cups from which they drink.  Unwashed cups will be washed by the Earth Ministry group.  Earth Ministry has procured a number of cups for this purpose, and we encourage the congregation to add to our collection from their own store of reasonably attractive unused mugs.

This is the first step toward our goal of replacing all disposable items from those church functions where food is served and replacing them with reusable dishes.  The Earth Ministry asks for your support and, of course, for any help you can give toward cleaning our non-disposable items.   It’s true, of course:  that means washing dishes... but remember:  it’s one of the things we do to become good stewards of God’s creation.
